Zimbabwe — East
Eastern Highlands and Miombo Woodlands
The Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe — the Vumba, Nyanga and Chimanimani ranges — are among Africa’s most productive and underbirded mountain systems. Swynnerton’s Robin, one of the continent’s most localised forest endemics, is found in the Bvumba forests. The endemic-rich Chirinda Forest at Mount Selinda adds further targets including Chirinda Apalis and Roberts’s Warbler.
The miombo woodlands that cover much of the region hold their own extraordinary cast: Miombo Tit, Mottled Swift, Boulder Chat and a suite of species that simply don’t occur in the more-visited destinations to the south. Combined with the highlands, eastern Zimbabwe offers one of the continent’s most rewarding 5–7 day itineraries for the serious birder.
