The Tour

Africa’s High-Altitude Endemic Zone

The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg escarpment is southern Africa’s great high-altitude birding destination. At its heart are a handful of endemics found only in this montane grassland and afro-alpine zone — the Drakensberg Rockjumper, Drakensberg Siskin and Sentinel Rock-Thrush among them — alongside one of Africa’s most stirring experiences: watching Bearded Vultures ride the thermals off the cliff faces at Giant’s Castle.

We combine high-altitude grassland walks for rockjumpers and siskins with the upper forest zone for Bush Blackcap, Barratt’s Warbler and Gurney’s Sugarbird, and the open slopes for raptors. Giant’s Castle’s vulture hide is a highlight of any visit. Most itineraries run 4–6 days.
