Western Cape
The Fynbos Kingdom
South Africa’s fynbos biome is one of the world’s six floral kingdoms — and within it lies the densest concentration of bird endemics on the African continent. The Cape Peninsula alone holds more than a dozen species found nowhere else, while the Overberg grain belt, the West Coast wetlands and the coastal forests of the Garden Route each add their own specialities to an already exceptional list.
We typically begin on the Peninsula — Boulders Beach for African Penguin, Cape Point for Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird in the proteas — before moving east to the Kogelberg for Victorin’s Warbler and Cape Rockjumper, and the Overberg for Blue Crane and Black Harrier. A 7–10 day itinerary does the province justice.
