Limpopo
Thornveld, Wetland and Tropical Lowveld
Limpopo is a province of transitions — where the Kalahari thornveld meets the tropical lowveld, and where Highveld grasslands give way to the Waterberg bushveld. Nylsvley Nature Reserve, one of Africa’s great Ramsar wetlands, is at its best in the summer rains when its floodplains host thousands of waterbirds. Mapungubwe National Park in the far north adds a striking landscape and a cluster of arid-zone specials.
The Waterberg supports one of the world’s largest Cape Vulture colonies at Marakele National Park. Combine this with Nylsvley in flood, the Soutpansberg for tropical species and the Limpopo Valley for dry-country birds, and you have a province that rewards extended exploration. We recommend 5–7 days.
