The Arid North
Kgalagadi, Richtersveld and Augrabies
The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest and least-visited province — and for the birder willing to make the journey, the rewards are exceptional. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park offers an arid-country spectacle unlike anything else on the continent: Sociable Weavers in their vast communal nests, Pygmy Falcons perched atop them, Burchell’s Sandgrouse at the waterholes at dawn and Pale Chanting Goshawks on every dead camel thorn.
The Richtersveld adds the extraordinary succulent biodiversity of the Nama Karoo and two endemics that exist nowhere else on earth: Sclater’s Lark on the rocky plains and Red Lark in the dune fields. Augrabies Falls National Park connects the two landscapes, with its own cast of arid-zone specials. We design Arid North tours around 5–7 days.
