Mauritius
Conservation’s Greatest Comeback Story
Mauritius has one of conservation’s greatest success stories. The Mauritius Kestrel, reduced to four known individuals in 1974, now numbers in the hundreds following one of the most intensive recovery programmes in ornithological history. The Pink Pigeon, Echo Parakeet and Mauritius Fody have followed similar trajectories, making the Black River Gorges a pilgrimage site for anyone interested in what sustained conservation can achieve.
Ile aux Aigrettes in the southeast provides the most intimate encounter with Mauritius Fody and Mauritius White-eye in a restored island ecosystem. Rodrigues, the outer island, adds Rodrigues Warbler and Rodrigues Fody to the list. A Mauritius itinerary runs 5–7 days, with an optional 2-day extension to Rodrigues.
