Kruger & Lowveld
Big Five Birding at Its Most Immersive
The northern reaches of Kruger National Park offer some of the most compelling birding on the continent. The Luvuvhu River thickets near Punda Maria hold Pel’s Fishing Owl, Thick-billed Cuckoo and Narina Trogon — species that draw birders back year after year. Beyond the park, the Limpopo Valley and surrounding lowveld add raptors, rollers and a suite of tropical species that don’t penetrate further south.
We structure Kruger itineraries around the birding rather than the driving — slower, more deliberate, with time spent at waterholes and thicket edges where the real discoveries happen. 5–7 days in the north, combining Punda Maria, Shingwedzi and the Luvuvhu floodplain, is our standard recommendation.
